Field notes
Engulfing patterns and the London open trap
The London open produces engulfing candles that look decisive because spreads and orders bunch into a short window. Many reverse before lunch.
A practical filter
If the engulfing print forms in the first thirty minutes, wait for a later candle to hold above the engulfing high (for bullish cases) or below the low (for bearish). Mid-morning confirmation is slower and often quieter.
Volume is not a substitute
Higher volume at the open is common. It does not replace a confirming close. Treat volume as context, not as permission to skip the next print.
Classroom habit
In the intensive, traders mark open-hour engulfing examples from the same week and write a one-line rule for when they will stand aside. The rule is usually stricter than the one they traded with on Monday.
